What this paper is about
An introduction to the concept of design thinking in terms of identifying the user's needs, ideation, and evaluating prototypes within the field of civil engineering. Technical aspects of this course cover conceptual design, design calculations, engineering drawings, testing of structural elements, and the construction and testing of structures.
The learning outcomes for this paper are linked to Washington Accord graduate attributes WA1-WA11. An explanation of the graduate attributes can be found at: https://www.ieagreements.org/assets/Uploads/Documents/IEA-Graduate-Attributes-and-Professional-Competencies-2021.1-Sept-2021.pdf
How this paper will be taught
The paper content is delivered through a combination of face-to-face lectures, face-to-face technical drawing sessions (laboratories), and face-to-face workshops.
Lectures:
Students are required to attend ALL lectures in person (attendance will be recorded).
Workshops:
Workshops start in the SECOND week of the trimester. Students must attend ONE workshop EACH week (attendance will be recorded), and sign-up will be available online via Moodle. It is compulsory to attend workshops; if students are absent from TWO OR MORE workshops, they will receive an IC grade.
Appropriate footwear must be worn in the workshops (i.e. no open-toed shoes, shoes must be secured at the heel.)
Sign-up will be available online via Moodle.
Technical Drawing Sessions (Labs):
The in-person technical drawing sessions start in the FIRST week of the trimester. Students must attend ONE technical drawing session EACH week (attendance will be recorded).
Sign-up will be available online via Moodle.
Required Readings
Supplementary material to be provided on Moodle.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:
Assessments
How you will be assessed
The design project for this paper has both group and individual components. Each component of the design contributes to the larger group project and group designs should be cohesive.
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.
